AVIGNONET-LAURAGAIS

About

Avignonet is located on the road to Santiago de Compostela (Voie d'Arles, Via Tolosa); The Canal du Midi runs at the foot of the village which houses two pretty locks ("En Cassan" and "Emborel") and a small marina (Port-Lauragais). In addition to the magnificent Gothic church Notre Dame des Miracles (XIV°-XVI° centuries), Avignonet has an interesting historical heritage, witness of its rich and tumultuous past: the remains of the ramparts (XIII° and XV° century) and the fortified castle (XI° century), the pepperpot tower bearing the statue of the crusader, the half-timbered houses and the residences of the XVII°. To note: in 1242, the village was the scene of a significant episode of the Cathar resistance against the Inquisition.
