The Garonne is an emblematic river of south-west France, rising in the Spanish Pyrenees and flowing through several French regions before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Bordeaux. It is one of France's major rivers and plays a significant historical, cultural and economic role in the region.
The Garonne flows through major cities such as Toulouse, Agen and Bordeaux. It flows for around 575 kilometres through a variety of landscapes. Historically, the river has been an important trade and transport route. This has facilitated trade between inland regions and seaports.
Because of its proximity to many communities and its contribution to the region's economic and social development, the Garonne has significant cultural and environmental importance. It has also been a source of inspiration for many artists, writers and poets over the centuries. Today, people use the Garonne for boating, agricultural irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.
In short, the Garonne is much more than just a river. The Garonne is an icon that has shaped the history and life of the south-west region of France.
